Brent Ozar’s article on silencing a Dell PE 1900 motivated us to replace the fans. At the time I did it, not so many articles were available on the web about silencing the 2950.

I have a Dell 2950 Gen III rack-mounted server sitting around here that I want to upgrade with SSDs. Since I haven't found anything related from Dell and just a few post that confirmed it'll work (and even more that say it won't!), I am getting curious what's right. I plan to put in Crucial MX100 128GB SSDs.

Current the Mark III is being used as our NAS for backups (it has a 6x2Tb drives in a RAID 6 config). The Mark II is being used as a physical Server 2003 box. Basically I want to switch the two, I want the NAS to be the Mark II and the other to be the Mark III which would receive a CPU/RAM upgrade and be re-purposed as a VM host for our 2012R2 I have a Dell Poweredge 2950 server, that I am sure is a generation 1 of this model. It has 8 gigs installed in a 4x2 setup. I am looking to upgrade to 32 gigs of ram, and through my searching of ebay, I have found that the ram for the generation 3 model of the server costs significantly less than the ram that is said to be for the generation 1. 18 product ratings - Dell PowerEdge 2950 3 III PE2950 Server 2xQuad-Core 2.8GHz Xeon 8GB PERC6/E RAID. I'm planning to deploye ESXi 5.1 to a Dell PowerEdge 2950 Series II server. It has 2 x QC 2.2 GHz Xeon CPUs, 16 GB RAM, and 6 x 1TB SATA HDDs connected to a PERC6/i RAID controller.
